Vital funds from the Dedham Vale AONB Sustainable Development Fund helped Nayland Farmers Market run a Smoothie Bike Challenge last Saturday which proved to be a huge success. Quirky events such as these really help pull in the crowds and with this in mind Justine Paul, owner of Suffolk Market Events and the person behind (…)Nayland Farmers’ Market, called in her contacts – first on the list, Transition Sudbury and owners of a Smoothie Bike! ‘Transition Sudbury are a fantastic group of volunteers who I know through Sudbury Farmers’ Market’ says Justine, ‘they aim to encourage everyone to live more sustainable lifestyles by inspiring people to grow their own food, buy from local producers and support their local shops and markets and I knew they had a Smoothie Bike in the cupboard!’
With funds from the Dedham Vale AONB Justine was able to buy fruit and apple juice directly from Willow Farm in Polstead, who also attend the market, and invest in branded cotton shopping bags that were given away, free of charge, to everyone who pedalled a smoothie. Signs were put up in the village and surrounding area and people, old and young, came along to have a go at creating smoothies using nothing but pedal power before going inside the hall to visit the market.
‘It really was a lovely morning’ says Justine ‘ even with some large events going on in the area, we still managed to attract lots of people who learnt about the fantastic local produce in the area and all about the work Transition Sudbury does for us. Funding from the Dedham Vale AONB made this event possible and I’d like to say a huge thank you for their continued support of Nayland Farmers’ Market.’
Nayland Farmers Market
Suffolk Market Events took over the ownership and management of Nayland Farmers’ Market in November 2014 when the market was struggling to survive. Now growing numbers of customers and more top quality local producers join up every month selling a range of goods. All the food at the market is grown, baked, brewed and butchered by the person who is selling it. The market is held on the second Saturday of every month 9.30am until 1pm at Nayland Village Hall, Church Lane, Nayland, CO6 4JH.
