Drawing From Life is an exhibition opening on Saturday April 16th in the lovely light filled Edmund Gallery on Angel Hill in Bury St Edmunds. The works on display have been made by a group of artists involved in a weekly figure drawing group in Sudbury led by Sue Marsdon. Sue went to Bath Academy of Art in the seventies – was introduced to life drawing on day one and has loved it ever since. She has been leading this group for 30 years and also takes a once monthly group at Gainsborough’s House!

Working from the human figure has been considered the ultimate challenge for artists for centuries. It is the most difficult but possibly the most rewarding of disciplines because unlike when drawing an inanimate object the artist is studying a person, very much alive and interesting, whatever shape or age.

Life drawing can also be considered a way of looking at ourselves, reminding us of the human condition, that we are all the same yet each unique. A good life drawing group requires respect for the model from those drawing, who in return, will be richly rewarded with the pleasure of developing their drawing skills and own artistic voice.

Sue Marsdon says that since the seventies she has witnessed figure drawing come in and out of fashion at art schools but that it has been a constant pleasure for her. As well as acknowledging the skills and loyalty of people within the group, some of whom have been attending for over twenty years, she also hopes that the work will demonstrate the skills of the life model, an unsung profession.

The exhibition is open from 10am until 4pm, ending on Thursday April 21st.
